Subaru Natsuki (ナツキ・スバル, Natsuki Subaru) is one of the main characters of Isekai Quartet. He is the protagonist from Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World. Originally a hikikomori (shut-in NEET) who played games until he was summon to his Isekai fantasy world where he meets the half-elf Emilia and becomes her knight. He is cursed by the Witch Satella from his isekai world which grants him the ability to come back life after he dies by going to a previous point in time. In the Isekai Quartet World, he is a student of Class 2 in charge of Animal Care.
Appearance[]
Natsuki Subaru is a teenage boy with spiky black hair and brown eyes. He has a rather average look but a somewhat evil gaze due to his eyes. He wears the tracksuit that he originally wore from his world.
Personality[]
Like his home series, he is a happy guy who while finding this situation strange, isn't too bothered by it. His love for Emilia still there if not a bit more healthy, and finds his new classmates to be pretty interesting. He takes honor in a battle of risking his life, and defends those he is close to. Though he does deadpan at Rem's love for him, and just looks confused by Kazuma's jealousy of him.
He is rather optimistic, and is very brave even when facing danger. Also showing a good strategy when using his 'penalty' to help his friends in field day. Rem states herself that he'll be fine no matter what. He often is the one to throw a punchline over the various issues that happens throughout the school life he shares with the other Isekai characters.
As Cocytus and Julius noted respectively, Subaru was walking the warrior's path and was learning to have the knight's chivalry making the boy the opposite to Kazuma.

Powers & Abilities[]
Return by Death (死に戻り Shinimodori): Returns the user to a "save point" after death. When Subaru learns that one can permanently die in the Isekai Quartet world, Subaru is uncertain if the death and revival function still works, he verified the penalty of talking about it still functions.
- Cursed Aura/Smell: The smell of the witch who granted him the Return by Death ability. Hamsuke from Overlord can't help himself trying to eat Subaru because of it.
- Penalties: Subaru is unable to reveal his ability to others. There are three primary penalties for attempting to do so:
- Subaru will be forcibly and painfully silenced by the Witch's hand, and in some cases die.
- Anyone who is told about Return By Death might potentially die.
- It will increase the density of Witch Factor at least for a short time which will draw any Demon Beasts in the immediate area to him like moths to a flame. This penalty can also attract undead and monsters like Hamsuke.
Strong Will: Subaru has a strong mental fortitude from the constant mental stress he's accustomed to from his world where he faces all sorts of terrible experiences, traumas, and deaths. This makes him unintimidated against Tanya's powerful magical aura when she unleashed it out of rage.
Time Magic Resistance: Subaru is immune to Ainz's Time Stop spell which is considered 10th tier level (mistranslated in the dub as 11th tier), a god level of magic, in Ainz's world.

Emilia Camp[]
Subaru's friends and allies from his own original Isekai world. He overall shares the same kind of relationship he has with them from their own world. This includes his attraction toward Emilia, his mutual attraction with Rem, his positive relationship with Puck, and a somewhat one-sided friendship with Ram and Beatrice. While he is surprised and a bit suspicious of Roswaal being his classes homeroom teacher, he still complies with the role Roswaal request he's put in as a student of Class 2. He expresses a level of accomplishment when Emilia became Class 2's representative.
He shed tears when Emilia gives him chocolate (Duty chocolate) while Rem gave him a massive chocolate for her love.
Felt[]
Prior to the events of Isekai Quartet, Subaru tried to negotiate with Felt to trade his cell phone for the badge that she had stolen from a silver-haired girl. During the loot cellar incident, he stopped an assassin from killing her. During the royal selection, Subaru received a kick from Felt.
During field day, he is surprised to see her. The teams of Subaru and Felt compete against each other in the cavalry game ending in a stalemate where both of them have admitted surprising each other. After the teachers (consisting of Roswaal, Mr. Rerugen, and two others whom Kazuma and Ainz recognize respectively) join in the game competing against the students, Reinhard suggests an alliance between the two classes in which Subaru and Felt agree. In addition, she reminds Subaru's team not to get the wrong idea as they will continue competing against each other after defeating the teachers. However and after a gigantic destructive machine (whom Kazuma recognized as the Mobile Fortress Destroyer) is added in the game, Reinhard decides he, Felt, and the rest of their team handled the teachers while Subaru's team is to deal with the Destroyer. Before the two different teams head for the respective targets, Felt throws a barb at Subaru for whining.
Reinhard van Astrea[]
Prior to the events of Isekai Quartet, Subaru considered Reinhard as a reliable friend. First, Reinhard saved Subaru's life from a trio of thugs and drew an assassin's attention to himself from the boy. Second, before and after Emilia dragged Subaru out of the throne, Reinhard provided the teenager information.
Sometime after ending up in this new world, Subaru is surprised to find Reinhard in Class 1.
During field day, the teams of Subaru and Reinhard compete against each other in the cavalry game ending in a stalemate. Prior to the events of Isekai Quartet, Subaru developed animosity towards Julius when the knight kissed Emilia's hand. After suffering a defeat at Julius' hands, Subaru did not look kindly to seeing the knight again.
After ending up in the new world, Subaru utters, "Ugh, Julius" when they cross paths in field day. During the cavalry game, the teams of Subaru and Julius compete against each other ending in a stalemate before the teachers (consisting of Roswaal, Mr. Rerugen, and two others whom Kazuma and Ainz recognized respectively) enters the competition. After agreeing on Reinhard's suggestion of an alliance between the two classes, Julius shields Subaru's team with light magic from the teachers. However and after a gigantic destructive machine (whom Kazuma recognizes as the Mobile Fortress Destroyer) is added in the game, Subaru agrees with Julius' suggestion of choosing different targets. Reinhard decides he and his team handle the teachers while Subaru's team is to deal with the Destroyer.
Petelgeuse Romanee Conti[]
Prior to the events of Isekai Quartet, Subaru hated Petelgeuse for leading the genocide on the people living in the Mathers domain including Emilia in his previous loops.
During Valentine's Day in the new world, the cake (chocolate) Albedo makes for Ainz has black hands reminds Subaru of Petelgeuse (who has the ability of Unseen Hands). The boy conceals his actual thoughts about the cake before uttering "death".

Kazuma Satou[]
Both were able to immediately identify each other as humans from another world although they point their respective means of transporting to their isekai world is different. They originally shared a mutual bond out of how they were both originally Shut-in NEETS who came to their respective Isekai-world in a tracksuit. However, when Subaru explains his overall lifestyle (not mentioning the more dark aspects of them), his friendship with Kazuma was cut short under the accusation that Kazuma believes that Subaru is living the good life surrounded by many pretty girls. Despite this cutback, they seem to be now on overall decent terms with each other such as how they were willing to cooperate and care for each other during the Sports Festival.
Aqua[]
Although there hasn't been much interaction between him and Aqua, the two seem to be on decent terms with each other as fellow classmates. He expressed shock when Aqua was able to identify that he was an human originally from Earth. He also displayed a fair amount of concern for Aqua when Tanya became enrage at her. Before Tanya was able to do anything to Aqua, he came to her defense. The fact that Aqua is a goddess doesn't seem to sink to him well as he sees Aqua as not very goddess-like.
After Hamsuke suggested doing a play about her glorious lord and subsequent arguments, Subaru lectured Aqua, "You realize, if you find yourself arguing with a kid, you've already lost".
Megumin[]
Megumin finds Subaru gross after seeing Subaru's actions and feelings over what two people do in a Courage Test. They later team-up to save Kazuma, Aqua and Tanya's men from detention.
Darkness[]
At first, Subaru attempts to defend Darkness from Grantz. However, the teenager finds her to be "a crazy lady" who asks him to hit her. Thus, Darkness makes the boy along with Grantz looked bad to the whole class.
When Megumin and Darkness seek Subaru and Emilia for help, the boy argues with Puck, "Even a masochist like Darkness isn't into stuff that disgusting."
Overlord[]
Ainz Ooal Gown[]
When Ainz formally introduces himself to Subaru, he was shown to be a bit wary of him due to his skeletal appearance. However, Subaru felt that Ainz was originally from Earth like him and felt it wouldn't hurt to get along with the Overlord. The two manages to start off with a shaky friendship after shaking hands. Ainz notably somewhat became aware of Subaru's Return by Death curse after touching his chest, but didn't press the matter any further. Subaru said he found Ainz touching his chest kinda unexpected and a bit scary and the two shared a rather awkward laugh. Their relationship eventually improve where Ainz was willing to comply with Subaru during the Sports Festival when he requested to Ainz to summon an army of undead.
Hamsuke[]
As a member of Animal Care, Subaru is charge of taking of Hamsuke. Hamsuke expressed interest in Subaru when he said how he met Hamsuke's kind before but smaller. A similar statement that Hamsuke mentioned she had with Ainz. Because of Subaru's Return by Death curse, Hamsuke find herself gnawing on Subaru and gets draw in by his Demon Beast penalty.

When Subaru is working part-time in the karaoke club, he finds what the particular combat maid of Ainz is pulling out as "super creepy".

Subaru is both surprised and clueless when the particular combat maid of Ainz calls him "mysterious".
Solution Epsilon[]
At the time Subaru brings in the honey toast that Ainz's combat maids have ordered during his part-time job in the karaoke club, one of them eats it when he is off guard. After arguing with two of them, he notices that particular one, "Hey! What are you chewing on right now? Spit it out!" Though she denies it, Subaru rebuts, "That's because you gulped it down! I heard it!"

Tanya von Degurechaff[]
Tanya is notable the only one of the main isekai protagonists who Subaru doesn't share any personal conversation with, though like everyone else Subaru is afraid of her. Despite that, the two share an overall decent relationship with each other as fellow classmates. An example is during the Sports Festival where they display a great amount of cooperation and concern for each other. Thanks to Aqua, they are aware they're Isekai characters.
Viktoriya Ivanovna Serebryakov/ "Visha" []
After the lieutenant gets Subaru's name right, he has to remind Ram, "Will you stop? Can't you see you're confusing the poor girl?" Later on, he helps her and Ram with barbecue.
During science class, "Visha" is one of the students participating in the scheme plotted by Subaru and Megumin to get five of their fellow classmates (including her three squad mates) out of detention.
After Subaru and his friends from his Isekai world find her working at the butcher's shop, he is one of her few classmates who questions her intention of working part-time jobs.
The Rising of the Shield Hero[]

After Subaru and the rest of the Student Animal Care committee finds a large bird (who introduced herself as Filo) in the pet stall, he and Aura have fun riding her. When Filo recognizes a demi-human girl as her companion, Subaru is knocked out for a few seconds by her ability to transform into a winged human girl.
Filo surprised Subaru and his co-workers regarding news about the upcoming school festival. He was about to answer Filo's question about what kind of stories would they like on a play, "Uh, well, my type of story is ..." Before he could finish, Hamsuke suggested doing one about her glorious lord.
Trivia[]
- Subaru is the only student of Class 2 wearing a casual modern outfit from the original human world.
- A gag that originated in Re:Zero had reached Isekai Quartet. Starting from Re:Zero, Subaru had the "Witch's Stench" that could attract demon beasts (known as Urugarum in the light novel/ Wolgarm in the anime) and was being gnawed on by those dog-like animals. In Isekai Quartet, Subaru's "Witch's Stench" attracted Death Knight and Hamsuke. Despite Roswaal placed Subaru in the Student Animal Care Committee, the boy had been the victim to the animal he was to take care of. In other words, Hamsuke lost control and gnawed on the boy. As an exception, Filo was unaffected by Subaru's "Witch's Stench". The large bird found Subaru and one of his classmates to be safe to play with before she became a student of Class 1 when she took the form of a winged human girl.
